POSITION SUMMARY
Leads and coordinates parks maintenance teams to ensure the effective upkeep of all Town-managed green spaces, including parks, sports fields and facilities, cemetery grounds, boulevards, highway rights-of-way, and trail systems. Provides leadership in the operation and maintenance of the Town's irrigation systems to ensure consistent service delivery.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Provides recommendations to the Manager of Parks and Facilities on operating and capital budgets related to Town‑managed green spaces.
- Offers technical guidance on landscape elements for Town projects, standards, and design considerations.
- Leads, directs, and supports Equipment Operators and Labourers in accordance with the CUPE Local 135 collective agreement.
- Coordinates day‑to‑day work activities, sets priorities, and ensures crews have the resources, information, and direction required to meet service standards.
- Oversees the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of the Town’s irrigation systems and ensures appropriate crew training and documentation.
- Maintains accurate operational, maintenance, and inspection records in compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
- Ensures parks, sports fields and facilities, open spaces, cemetery grounds, boulevards, highway rights‑of‑way, and trail systems meet established maintenance and presentation standards.
- Monitors and manages safety equipment, inventory, and supply needs, ensuring purchases follow Town policies and budget controls.
- Conducts regular inspections of outdoor spaces to identify hazards, maintenance requirements, and opportunities for improvement, and assigns follow‑up work accordingly.
- Collaborates daily with the Surface Works Lead to coordinate exterior maintenance activities and ensure cohesive service delivery.
- Participates in the on‑call schedule on a rotational basis as required by operational needs.
- Ensures that all staff practices comply with Occupational Health and Safety legislation, Town safety policies.
- Maintains equipment records and ensures licensing, insurance, repairs, and safety requirements are timely and compliant.
- Leads daily safety meetings and supports a proactive, collaborative safety culture within the unionized workforce.
- Responds to departmental incidents and ensures all required reporting and documentation are completed accurately and promptly.
- Assists with safety audits, inspections, and compliance activities.
- Communicates professionally with the public and provides coaching, guidance, and conflict‑resolution support to staff while maintaining respect for union roles and processes.
- Familiar with and adherence to the Town of Drumheller's safety policy and relevant Occupational Health and Safety legislation.
- Performs other related duties consistent with the classification
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Completion of a related post-secondary education program is an asset.
- Three to Five (3-5) years related supervisory experience in park management, preferably in a municipal setting.
- Completion of supervisory courses from the Canadian Public Works Association or Alberta Recreation Facility Personnel Association or equivalent is an asset.
- An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Highly skilled in account analysis and reconciliation.
- Advanced proficiency with computers including Microsoft Office and Software Accounting programs.
- An aptitude for detail and data integrity.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills to clearly convey information and explain detailed processes and create reports or documents.
- Effective problem solver with the ability to recommend solutions and to convey those solutions in confidence.
- Strict sense of integrity and willingness to adhere to the Town of Drumheller’s confidentiality policy and all applicable privacy laws.
- Ability to work within a dynamic team as well as delegate work and supervise and support staff.
- Holds a valid Class 5 driver’s license and can obtain a satisfactory criminal record check.
Employment Category: Permanent Full-Time
Hours per Week: 40 hours FTE
Compensation: $43.92 / Hour (CUPE 135 Parks Lead)
