The Drumheller Victim Services Program is a police-based Victim Services Program whose goal is to support, inform, and refer. Our volunteers work in partnership with the RCMP to help victims of crime, tragedy, and trauma to resources to help them build the foundation that they need to achieve healing and recovery.
Specialized training is provided in over 30 crises support and intervention situations including, but not limited to: assaults, sexual assaults, hate crimes, property crimes, robbery, family violence, sudden death, and bereavement.
Volunteer Requirements:
- Must be minimum 18 years of age
- Must have Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Resident Status
- Must complete and pass an RCMP Enhanced Security Clearance
- Must have no criminal charges pending before the courts
- Must have clear verbal and written communication skills
- Must be available for occasional evenings and weekends on-call
- Must have a valid driver’s licence with access to a vehicle
- Must be able to build and foster a positive relationship with law enforcement and our partner agencies and resources
Provide Crisis Support:
- Short-term Emotional support (by listening with empathy)
- Practical support (providing the victim with contact information for our Crown Prosecutor’s Office)
- Peer support
- Referrals to community resources
Provide Information:
- Police processes
- Criminal justice processes and outcomes
- Opportunities for the victim to participate in the process (Victim Impact Statements)
- Court Updates
- Community resources available
Provide Referrals:
- Referring Victims to any and all appropriate agencies that provide counselling, legal, and/or financial resources
Advocates do not provide counselling.
