The role is dual-focused, ensuring the curation and dissemination of Atlas historical content/narrative and ensuring the smooth operation of the organization’s overall operations (with a particular focus on staffing and HR).

Responsibilities:

  1. Overall responsibility for the curation of the Atlas’ historical narrative. This includes programming content, interpretative content, event content and maintaining relationships with our former miners and their families.
  2. Overall responsibility for incoming archival and artifactual donations, including making final decisions on which donations to accept into the collections (as per our mandate and collections policy). Providing advice to collections personnel regarding accessioning, context and potential deaccessioning of collections materials.
  3. Designing and implementing new exhibit spaces around site and updating current exhibit spaces in consultation with the Executive Director (ED) and Conservator.
  4. Being the ‘public face’ of the Atlas historical narrative by undertaking public talks, working with ED on marketing materials/sponsorships and writing content suitable for publication in a variety of venues.
  5. Implementing the summer staff recruitment drive, including applying for appropriate summer employment subsidy grants.
  6. In conjunction with the Director of Visitor Services, appraising, interviewing and hiring summer contract staff.
  7. In conjunction with the Director of Visitor Services and Conservator, designing and implementing the summer staff training program
  8. Overseeing staff coaching and mentorship at all levels.
  9. Addressing HR and infrastructural issues in conjunction with the Atlas management team.
  10. Occasional delivery of public and school tours and assisting with special events as needed.
  11. As we are a small team at the Atlas, occasionally assisting the management team with other tasks may be required.

Work Environment and Compensation Package:

The Atlas is an outdoor historic industrial site in a rural location with offices in heritage buildings.  Work conditions can be challenging at times, due to the nature of the site and the Drumheller environment (extreme heat during the summer, difficult local terrain, historic buildings).

The Curator-Operations Manager will work 37.5 hours/week.  Although some overtime and irregular hours will be expected, hours per week will not normally exceed 44.

This is a full-time, salaried position at $50,000 per annum.  Benefits include inclusion in a group extended health benefit package and 3 weeks paid leave per annum.  Salary and benefits will be reviewed annually, subject to an annual performance review.
