The County of Stettler No. 6 is seeking a motivated and experienced individual to fill the position of Mechanic within the Operations Department. This hands-on position is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of a diverse municipal fleet, including light-duty vehicles, heavy equipment, trucks, trailers, and other specialized equipment.

Working from the County’s Operations Facility, the General Mechanic plays an important role in keeping equipment safe, reliable, and ready to support road maintenance, construction, snow removal, and other municipal operations. The successful candidate will bring strong mechanical knowledge, practical problem-solving skills, a commitment to workplace health and safety, and the ability to work effectively as part of the Operations team.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Diagnose, repair, service, and maintain County vehicles, heavy equipment, trucks, trailers, and other machinery.
• Complete preventative maintenance, scheduled servicing, and equipment inspections.
• Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and related equipment issues.
• Perform repairs and overhauls in accordance with manufacturer specifications and accepted industry practices.
• Interpret work orders, technical manuals, schematics, and manufacturers’ specifications.
• Identify equipment deficiencies and recommend appropriate repairs or maintenance.
• Maintain accurate maintenance, inspection, repair, and service records.
• Assist with planning and scheduling preventative maintenance to minimize equipment downtime.
• Ensure work is completed in accordance with County health and safety requirements, safe work procedures, and applicable legislation.
• Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
• Work collaboratively with equipment operators, supervisors, other County departments, contractors, and suppliers.
• Assist with ordering parts, supplies, and materials as required.
• Participate in on-call, emergency, and after-hours repair requirements when necessary.
• Provide operational support during busy periods or emergency situations as required.
• Participate in training and professional development opportunities.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

• Valid Heavy Equipment Technician (HET) Journeyman Certificate.
• Valid Automotive Service Technician (AST) Journeyman Certificate.
• Valid Class 5 Driver’s License (Class 1 or 3 considered an asset).
• Strong knowledge of heavy equipment, trucks, vehicles, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, diagnostics, and repair practices.

• Experience maintaining construction, road maintenance, agricultural, or municipal equipment is considered an asset.
• Ability to diagnose problems and complete repairs independently.
• Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to work independently while contributing positively to a team environment.
• Commitment to safe work practices and maintaining a safe and organized work environment.
• Familiarity with municipal operations and fleet management practices is considered an asset.
• Ability to lift a minimum of 23 kilograms (50 lbs).
• Willingness to participate in on-call duties and after-hours work when required.

Hours of Work

The typical work schedule is a 40 hour work week, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break.
