POSITION SUMMARY

The Equipment Operator II is responsible for operating a variety of equipment and vehicles up to and over 30,000 lbs GVW (13,600 kg). With general direction provided by the Utilities Manager and the Underground Lead, this position also performs the required daily maintenance on assigned equipment and completes other general laborer duties. Regular work with water and wastewater systems is also required.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES

Equipment Operation and Maintenance

  • Performs equipment operations and general manual laborer duties.
  • Operates trucks up to and over 30,000 lbs GVW (13,600 kg), including water trucks, vac trucks, polecat/picker trucks, tandem dump trucks, Hydrovac, and sewer flush trucks.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as backhoes and loaders.
  • Operates skid steers or equivalent compact equipment.
  • Hauls equipment, tools, materials (gravel, asphalt, topsoil, etc.).
  • Operates industrial-type tractors with pull-type equipment as required.
  • Documents events and prepares basic reports as required.
  • Demonstrates competency in the operation of all assigned equipment.
  • Maintains accurate records of work completed and equipment usage.

Utilities and Labour Support

  • Performs general manual laborer duties associated with utilities work, including excavation, pipe work, site cleanup, and restoration.
  • Assists with the installation, repair, and maintenance of water and wastewater infrastructure.
  • Conducts garbage collection and disposal as required.
  • Participates in on-call duties on a rotational basis as assigned.
  • Follows all Town of Drumheller health & safety policies and procedures and maintains compliance with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety standards.
  • Provides guidance and direction to assigned staff during specific projects or operations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Valid Class 3 driver's license with Q endorsement (Class 1 preferred); able to operate and maintain department machinery.
  • Minimum two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in a similar role, preferably within a municipal or utilities environment.
  • Supervisory or leadership training from the Canadian Public Works Association (or equivalent) is an asset.
  • Water distribution or wastewater collection courses/certifications are assets.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with light-hand tools and specialized equipment.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum 18 years of age and legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • May be required to take training related to the duties of a higher classification or upgrading within the present classifications.
  • Works effectively with minimal supervision and manages variable workloads.
  • Reads and writes in English and follows written and oral instructions accurately.
  • Works flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and some General Holidays.
  • The successful candidate will be required to obtain a clear Criminal Record Check, a clear Vulnerable Sector Check, and a 10-year driver's abstract.

Compensation:                        $33.89 / Hour
